「仏教聖典」とは？
お釈迦さまとして知られる仏教の開祖、ブッダ(仏陀=目覚めた人の意)が説いた真実の教えを集めた「お経」の中から、教えの大切な要素とたとえ話を選び、それらを日常のやさしいことばにかえて表現したものです。

「仏教聖典」に目を通し、その中から気に入った名言を引用させて頂きます。
こんなに沢山のありがたい名言がありました。

I read through "THE TEACHING OF BUDDHA."
I will introduce my favorite Buddha's words to you from
this sacred book. You can meet lots of valuable maxims.

人間が生きていることは、結局何かを求めていることにほかならない。
しかし、この求めることについては、誤ったものを求めることと、
正しいものを求めることの二つがある。誤ったものを求めることというのは、
自分が老いと病と死とを免れることを得ない者でありながら、
老いず病まず死なないことを求めていることである。
正しいものを求めることというのは、この誤りを悟って、
老いと病と死とを超えた、人間の苦悩のすべてを離れた境地を求めることである。
今の私は、この誤ったものを求めている者にすぎない。

A man struggling for existence will naturally look for something
of value. There are two ways of looking - a right way and a wrong
way. If he looks in the wrong way he recognizes that sickness,
old age and death are unavoidable, but he seeks the opposite.
If he looks in the right way he recognizes the true nature of
sickness, old age and death, and he searches for meaning in that
which transcends all human sufferings. In my life of pleasures
I seem to be looking in the wrong way.

身を正し、心を正し、ことばを誠あるものにしなければならない。
貪ることをやめ、怒りをなくし、悪を遠ざけ、常に無常を忘れてはならない。

You will keep your behavior right, your mind pure and your words
faithful. By always thinking about the transiency of your life, you
will be able to resist greed and anger, and will be able to avoid
all evils.

世は無常であり、生まれて死なない者はいない。

Life is ever changing; none can escape the dissolution of the body.

仏の本質は肉体ではない。さとりである。肉体はここに滅びても、
さとりは永遠に法と道とに生きている。

But the true Buddha is not a human body: - it is Enlightment.
A human body must die, but the Wisdom of Enlightment will exist
forever in the truth of the Dharma, and in the practice of the Dharma.

人びとの憂い、悲しみ、苦しみ、もだえは、どうして起こるのか。
つまりそれは、人に執着があるからである。
富に執着し、名誉利欲に執着し、悦楽に執着し、自分自身に執着する。
この執着から苦しみ悩みが生まれる。

Where is the source of human grief, lamentation, pain and agony?
Is it not to be found in the fact that people are generally desirous.
They cling obstinately to lives of wealth and honor, confort and
pleasure, excitement and self indulgence, ignorant of the fact
that the desire for these very things is the source of human suffering.

人はこの愛欲の世界に、ひとり生まれ、ひとり死ぬ。

Truly, in this world of lust, a person is born alone and dies alone.

生があれば死があり幸いがあれば災いがある。善いことがあれば悪いことがある。
人はこのことを知らなければならない。

Birth goes with death. Fortune goes with misfortune. Bad things
follow good things. People should realize this.

ものはみなうつり変わり、現われては滅びる。
生滅にとらわれることなくなりて、
静けさと安らぎは生まれる。

Everything changes,
Everything appears and disappears,
There is perfect tranquility
When one transcends both life and extinction.

心を平らにせよ。心が平らになれば、世界の大地も
みなことごとく平らになる。

Keep your mind level. If the mind is level, the whole world will be level.

過去は追ってはならない。未来は待ってはならない。ただ現在の一瞬だけを、
強く生きねばならない。

Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate
the mind on the present moment.

幾千万の人が住んでいても、互いに知りあうことがなければ、社会ではない。

Thousands of people may live in a community but it is not one of
real fellowship until they know each other and have sympathy for
one another.

互いに和らぎむつみあって争うことなく、同信の人とともに住む幸せを喜び、
慈しみ交わり、人びとの心と一つになるように努めなければならない。

Members of the Buddha's Samgha should associate together with
affectionate sympathy, being happy to live together with fellow-followers,
and seeking to become one in spirit.

さわやかなそよ風や、一輪の花が春の来たことを告げるように、
ひとりが悟りを開けば、草木国土、山河大地、ことごとくみな仏の国となる。
なぜならば、心が清ければ、そのいるところもまた清いからである。

And just like a soft breeze and a few blossoms on a branch that
tell the coming of spring, so when a person attains Enlightenment,
grass, trees, mountains, rivers and all other things begin to throb
with new life. If a person's mind becomes pure, his surroundings
will also become pure.

一つの灯（ともしび）がともると、次々に他の灯に火が移されて、
尽きるところがないように、仏の心の灯も、人びとの灯に
次から次へと火を点じて、永遠にその終わるところを知らないであろう。

As the light of a small candle will spread from one to another in
succession, so the light of Buddha's compassion will pass on from
one mind to another endlessly.

一人の人のこの世に生まるるは、多くの人の利益（りやく）のため、
多くの人の幸せのため、又、世間をあわれむがため、人と天との利益と
幸せのために生まるるなり。

There is one person whose birth into the world is for the welfare of
many, for the happiness of many: who is born out of compassion
for the world, for the profit, welfare and happiness of heavenly beings
and mankind.
